Key Responsibilities of a Buyer

  • Manage the procurement of materials, components and services in line with production requirements
  • Source and negotiate with suppliers to achieve best value in cost, quality and delivery
  • Raise and manage purchase orders, ensuring accuracy and timely processing
  • Monitor supplier performance and maintain strong working relationships
  • Work closely with Production, Engineering and Planning teams to support operational needs
  • Review stock levels and support inventory control to avoid shortages or excess stock
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and support continuous improvement initiatives
  • Ensure compliance with company purchasing procedures and quality standards

Key Skills of a Buyer

  • Previous experience in a Buyer or Procurement role, ideally within a manufacturing or engineering environment
  • Strong negotiation and supplier management skills
  • Good understanding of MRP/ERP systems
  • Commercial awareness with the ability to manage budgets and cost controls
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to liaise across departments
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
